HTC Takes Aim at Samsung With "Sensation" Phone
HTC Corp., currently Taiwan's No.1 brand-smartphone supplier, recently unveiled its latest phone christened Sensation in collaboration with SK Telecom, showing its intention to defend its championship in the market for Android-based phones from Samsung.

Although HTC regained the No.1 title from Samsung in the first quarter of the year, Samsung has been stepping up heat by introducing the dual-core Galaxy S2 in April. Samsung sold up to 120,000 units of the latest phone in three days of the rollout, outshining iPhone 4 debut in South Korea in the comparable period. Advance purchases of Galaxy S2 a week before the rollout even topped 200,000 systems.

Industry executives estimated Sensation phone would help boost HTC's revenue to around NT$40 billion (US$1.37 billion at US$1: NT$29) in May, up from NT$38.7 billion (US$1.33 billion) it had in April. The phone is even likely to help the company's shipments of various phones reach the top end of the projected 11-15 million-system range.

HTC CEO Peter Chou said Sensation will give South Korean consumers unprecedented smartphone experience with its features including the HTC Watch multimedia service and the Sense UI man-machine interface.

SK Telecom has been working with HTC since 2008. Selling Sensation makes the telecom carrier the world's third franchised dealer of the HTC phone, after Vodafone and T-Mobile.
